Uncle Helen puts her foot in it, again

John Key suggests suspended Assisitant Police Commissioner Clint Rickards should be removed. Fair call. He could never seriously return to a senior position with the Police (despite a "Not Guilty" verdict, which, as an aside, demonstrates the public's opinion of the NZ Court system). This may, naturally, involve a payout to Rickards for breaking his contract (the figure of a million has been thrown around.)

Uncle Helen, in her wisdom, calls this suggestion "Reckless" with Government funds (Full story here). This is because a disciplinary procedure is under way. And has been for three years. While Rickards remains on full pay (estimates range from $200K to $250K per year). And they've ignored that if the substantially demote him, they will have to pay out a whole pile of money anyway.

So, Rickards has collected somewhere between $600K and $750K over the last three years (while he studied for an MBA, and I understand is now doing a law degree) instead of the Government paying him, say, a million bucks to walk away, which would be "reckless" with Government money. And, he'll probably end up with a big settlement anyway. Clint Rickards, you are officially a genius, and my workplace hero.

And when did the Labour Party get all prissy with taxpayer dollars?? Has she not been paying attention for the last eight years??

What bothers me, above all else, is that by all accounts, Helen is an intelligent person (these are other people's accounts, I'm not brave enough to go anywhere near her. You'd need to be a brave person to look at that mug first thing in the morning without screaming). And yet, her comment on this strikes me as the stupidest thing I've heard in a while.

Ahh well, there's an election next year.
